A peripherally inserted central catheter, also called a PICC line is a long term reliable central vascular access inserted through a vein in the upper arm. PICC LINE terminates in a larger vein called the vena cava. Very rarely will you see a PICC line placed in the leg. PICC LINES are used to deliver medications and other treatments directly to the large central veins. PICC lines require careful care and monitoring for complications which may include infection and blood clots. If you're considering a PICC line, discuss the benefits and risks with our vascular team.
Midline catheters are a type of peripheral vascular access with the catheter longer than regular peripheral intravascular access. Midline catheters are inserted with ultrasound guidance into the larger diameter veins of the upper arm and tend to last longer than the peripheral intravascular access. Midline catheters instead of peripheral IV are recommended if the duration of IV therapy will likely exceed six days, and the duration of therapy is less than a month. Midline catheters have gained popularity because of the ease of insertion, low cost, and lower risk of infection.
A peripheral intravenous line is inserted in a peripheral vein of the arms, hands, legs, and feet. Peripheral intravenous catheter (PIV) insertions are the mainstay for delivering medication to acutely ill patients. Medication administered via PIV travels through the veins to the heart, from where it is distributed to the rest of the body through the circulatory system. A peripheral IV line consists of a shorter Catheter than a midline. Many factors may complicate the process of obtaining PIV access, including obesity, IV drug abuse, hypovolemia, and a variety of chronic medical problems. Ultrasound guided Peripheral IV is a fast and reliable way of obtaining vascular access for patients who vascularly challenged. It allows for faster cannulation of veins in patients with challenges to vascular access.
It becomes very frustrating to the nursing staff when a PICC LINE clots.
Nurses are unable to draw blood or administer medication through the line
because it has clotted off. XPAC mobile vascular team has an answer to
clotted PICC LINE. Our team declots PICC line by using Alteplase (rTPA) to
break up the clot. Alteplase (rTPA) usually declots the the line, but
sometimes the PICC LINE will need to be replaced
When patients no longer require Vascular Access, you can count on our team to remove the access. The removal of a PICC line is quick and usually pain- free. XPAC mobile vascular assessment uses best practices when removing PICC Line. The securement device holding the line is removed, after which the line is gently pulled from the arm.
